Martin Fondse, Composer of the Netherlands: “Annemijn Rol stood out in All Together Now, which I composed especially for CityProms, with her passionate solo playing and remarkable musical insight. And all this with an infectious relaxation and enthusiasm”.

Making music plays a very important role in Annemijn’s life and was instilled in her from an early age. At her home, not a day goes by without making music. Together with her parents, she went to concerts at a young age and her father regularly took her to the conservatory where he worked. Her interest in music only grew. At the age of four, she chose the violin and started violin lessons. She currently has classical lessons from violin pedagogue Arjen Beintema. From 2020 to 2022, Annemijn had lessons from Julia Philippens, who is one of the few jazz violinists in the Netherlands, a great example for Annemijn.

In addition to playing the violin, Annemijn also enjoys composing music. At the age of eight, she wrote her own song with which she participated in the composition competition of the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. With the composition, ’Cat Of Love’, she made it to the finals in Tivoli Vredenburg.

She also regularly received assignments to write music from her teacher Julia Philippens.
In 2021, she played a self-written intro to a blues by Charlie Parker together with Julia, Mike Boddé and Fuse in a broadcast of Podium Witteman, after which she then improvised merrily over the blues.

Annemijn was a soloist with the Frysk Jeugd Orkest in September 2022. She played A Night In Tunisia.
In the same month, she also became a permanent member of the FJO.

Annemijn submitted her composition Pepper for the annual composition competition of the Netherlands Wind Ensemble in 2022. Together with Floris, who played his Fender Rhodes for the occasion, she made it to the finals again and brother and sister improvised happily in a packed Tivoli Vredenburg.

In March 2023, Annemijn was allowed to play “There Will Never Be Another You” with the Lex Jasper Quartet. This was a wonderful practice for the self-organized “Rolo’s Music Matinee” where Lex Jasper was a special guest.

In January 2024, Annemijn started monthly violin lessons with Jeffry Bruinsma. This great jazz violinist teaches at the Amsterdam Conservatory and helped her prepare for her audition for the Junior Jazz College of that same conservatory.

In May of this year, Annemijn had a few more great experiences with the FJO. A concert with guest conductor Jaap van Zweden and a concert in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

On June 8, 2024, she auditioned for the Junior Jazz College of the Amsterdam Conservatory and was accepted to start this program in September as the youngest violinist ever. Here she will receive lessons from Jeffrey Bruinsma and Simon Rigter, among others.

Annemijn Rol: “I actually always take my violin with me when I go away for a weekend or on vacation or when I go to a concert. Because imagine that you can play together somewhere. That’s how I’ve already met a lot of good and fun musicians to play with”.
